Another year and another move - the
event is again held on a Sunday and, in spite of low early
registration, attendance was up slightly from 1989 with 153 people
participating. The day's activities were the same in scope as in
years previous. The EAA museum was open to attendees, business
meetings throughout the afternoon, and the social time in the Fergus
Plaza. The dinner and ceremony were again held in the Goldwater
Room.
After an invocation by Reverend Bill
Barnhart, EAA Chaplin, and a buffet dinner the evening's ceremony
began. David Duax, WAHF President, again fulfilled MC duties. After
a short welcome and status report of the organization, he introduced
Archie Becher, Chairman of the Wisconsin Council on Aeronautics.
Becher stressed the needed support of the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of
Fame and its goal of a written record of the state's aviation
history. Carl Swickley, Director of the EAA Museum, was recognized
for his efforts on the Kohler Plaza. The plaza is located just
inside the museum's entrance and provides a special area for
recognition of the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame.
WAHF Director Archie Becher next
shared the story of the evening's first inductee - Harry Chaplin.
Accepting the plaque and other WAHF materials for the entire Chaplin
family, was Harry's widow Carol. Another WAHF Director, Earl Pingel,
introduced inductee Carl Guell. Carl's acceptance speech began with
a sharing of two fortune cookie fortunes; "You will be
fortunate in everything" and "You will shortly receive a
great honor". He next thanked "his great, no make that
wonderful wife Elaine". WAHF Director Bob Sather then
introduced James Lovell, the third WAHF inductee for 1990.
Six previous inductees were in
attendance - S. J. 'Steve' Wittman (86), Paul Poberezny (86), Howard
Morey (87), Dale Crites (89), Dean Crites (89), and Fritz Wolf (89).
Special speaker for the evening was Verne Jobst, United Airlines
Captain, EAA Director, and inductee into the Illinois Aviation Hall
of Fame.
